Farewell to our beloved Betsy

Betsy Scholze, board member and our Patron has passed away.

A message from Steve Stott, President of the Sherman Players.

It is almost impossible to express our deep sadness at the loss of Betsy Scholze, who passed away peacefully, with her family around her after a long illness, on August 10, 2022.

Betsy simply WAS the Sherman Players.  Granddaughter of our founder, set painter, actor, technician, Producer, 3 times President, Treasurer for over 30 years, named Patron in 2021 and an active Board Member for 60 years, right up until her passing.  Her’s is quite a legacy.

I know I speak for everyone associated with the Sherman Players over the years when I say that Betsy will be greatly missed.  That’s quite an understatement really, considering just what she’s meant to us, and the whole community for so long.

Betsy loved the Sherman Players and the Playhouse, and that love has certainly made its way into the fabric of the theatre.  How could it not, after such a long and illustrious association?

For my own part, I will always be grateful for the support and encouragement Betsy has given me since becoming President.  I could always turn to her for advice, or an occasional much-needed pep-talk.  She had pretty much seen it all, theatrically speaking, over the years and I don’t believe I ever saw her flustered or cross.  Of course, she was never shy with her observations regarding the latest show or happenings at the Playhouse, and could always be relied upon for a constructive and honest opinion.

I spoke with Betsy on Players’ business a few days before she passed, and while her condition and its treatment had left her physically frail she remained as sharp and engaged as ever.  I had no idea that this would be the last time I’d get to talk with her.  I’ll remember with great affection her love of life, sharp wit and kindness.

This isn’t really farewell, Betsy – we know you’re still with us when ever we’re at Playhouse.

Steve
