 THE SHOW

Based on the beloved Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SNOOPY!!! sparkles with wit and warmth as it depicts life as seen through the eyes of Schulz’s unforgettable characters. This updated musical, adapted at Texas State University in 2017, features a brand-new song (“Husband Material”) with music by Larry Grossman and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, composer/lyricist of the additional material for YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN (Revised).

WHAT WE NEED

We are seeking seven actors, aged approximately 20 – 30.  The genders of the characters are provided in their descriptions for guidance.  Roles are open to all ethnicities and genders.

Please come prepared with 16 measures of a light Broadway song similar to the style of songs in YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN. (Selections from YAGM,CB would be fine.) Have another song ready in case the creative staff would like to hear something else.

The vocal ranges for each character are noted with their descriptions. (For reference, Middle C = C4, and pitches in parentheses are just quick pickup notes or passing notes.) If you aren’t sure of your range, don’t worry, we can determine that at the audition.

An accompanist will be provided. No a cappella or singing to pre-recorded tracks. Music should be in a binder with your audition cut clearly marked. If you don’t have a binder, taped sheets of no more than three across would be fine, but no stapled or loose sheets, please.  No music on phones or tablets.

Dress comfortably for light dance and be prepared to learn a movement.

Dialogue sides will be available if the director asks you to stay and read something.

Please bring a recent headshot and theatrical resume if available.

CHARACTERS

Snoopy (M) – Snoopy is an extroverted beagle with a Walter Mitty complex. He is a virtuoso at every endeavor – at least in his daydreams atop his doghouse. He regards his master, Charlie Brown, as “that round-headed kid” who brings him his supper dish. A one-man show with superior intelligence and vivid imagination, he has created such multiple personalities as: Joe Cool, The World War I Flying Ace, Foreign Legionnaire, etc.
Vocal Range (B2) C3 to Ab4 (A4)

Woodstock (Any) – Snoopy’s pal. A yellow bird. Unlike normal birds, he doesn’t like to fly south every winter, and his flying skills are not quite up to snuff.
Woodstock is a non-speaking / non-singing role.  We are looking for someone with great physical performance skills.  (Woodstock may just steal the show!)

Linus (M) – Linus Van Pelt inspired the term “security blanket” with his classic pose. He is the intellectual of the gang and flabbergasts his friends with his philosophical revelations and solutions to problems. He suffers abuse from his big sister, Lucy, and the unwanted attentions of Charlie Brown’s little sister, Sally. He is a paradox: despite his age, he can put life into perspective while sucking his thumb. He knows the true meaning of Christmas while continuing to believe in the Great Pumpkin.
Vocal Range (Bb2) D3 to G4

Lucy (F) – Lucy Van Pelt works hard at being bossy, crabby. She is loud and yells a lot. Her smiles and motives are rarely pure. She’s a know-it-all who dispenses advice whether you want it or not–and for Charlie Brown, there’s a charge. As she sees it, hers is the only way. The absence of logic in her arguments holds a kind of shining lunacy. When it comes to compliments, Lucy only likes receiving them. If she’s paying one–or even smiling–she’s probably up to something devious.
Vocal Range A3 to F5

Charlie Brown (M)– Charlie Brown wins your heart with his losing ways. It always rains on his parade, his baseball game, and his life. He’s an inveterate worrier who frets over trifles (but who’s to say they’re trifles?). He can be spotted a mile away in his sweater with the zig zag trim, head down, hands in pocket, headed for Lucy’s psychiatric booth. He is considerate, friendly and polite and we love him knowing that he’ll never win a baseball game or the heart of the little red-haired girl, kick the football Lucy is holding or fly a kite successfully. His friends call him “wishy-washy,” but his spirit will never give up in his quest to triumph over adversity.
Vocal Range E3 to F#4 (G4)

Sally Brown (F) – Sally Brown’s brother, Charlie Brown, was so pleased and proud when she was born that he passed out chocolate cigars. Since then, he’s been trying to understand her. She always looks for the easy way out, particularly at school, where her view of life reflects much of the frustration and confusion kids experience. Her speech is riddled with malapropisms. Uninhibited, and precocious, she has a schoolgirl crush on Linus, her “Sweet Babboo.” She may never win Linus’ heart, but she has her big brother wrapped around her little finger.
Vocal Range (G3) Ab3 to F#5 (Ab5 in ensemble)

Peppermint Patty (F) – Peppermint Patty is almost always referred to and addressed by her complete nickname. An outgoing and sporty girl, she has a crush on Charlie Brown (whom she always calls “Chuck”)  and she struggles with education and homework. Peppermint Patty is loyal, courageous, and still vulnerable.
Vocal Range G3 to E5 (up to Ab5 in ensemble)

Press for THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SNOOPY!!!

“A sparkling jewel that dazzles the eye and warms the heart… I loved every moment.” – Lynn Beaver, Broadway World

“Effervescent…Larry Grossman’s melodies and Hal Hackady’s lyrics provide the playful glue that keep things zipping tightly along” – Joel Hirschhorn, Variety

“Incontrovertibly an ensemble show…Schulz’s cartoon characters remain as endearing today as when they were first drawn.” – Christopher Wiley, Musical Theatre Review

“Retains the fast, sharp comic appeal and instantly recognizable characterizations of the line-drawing originals, but also irresistibly brings it to human form by buoying up its snapshot scenes with the tuneful ease of the light, bright melodies of composer Larry Grossman’s settings to Hal Hackaday’s apt, witty lyrics.” – Mark Shenton, What’s On Stage
